What is bandwidth?

Each website receives an allowance of the amount of data that can be transferred each month to and from your website. Each time a visitor to your website clicks on a page, downloads pictures on the page or clicks on a file it uses bandwidth. A simple comparison to a “bricks and mortar” store would be the traffic or visitors walking into your shop.

How is this measured?

Bandwidth is measured in Gigabytes, and renews on the first of each month. Each month, on the first of the month, you receive a new allocation of bandwidth according to the maintenance and hosting plan that you are on. (Similar to your phone mobile data plan)

What is disk-space?

Each website has a limited amount of storage space which is used to store all of the content of your website including, files, images, emails, documents, sound files, video. To extend the “bricks and mortar” analogy, it relates to the store itself. The bigger the store the more content you can have inside it.

How is this measured?

Disk-space is measured in Gigabytes but does not renew. It simply continues to increase as you add more data to your website. When you remove data from the website it goes down and continues to fluctuate as you add and remove content to your website. It is valuable to note that if your email accounts are hosted with Magicdust, this will also count towards your disk-space allowance.

The main issues relating to high resource usage are usually related to image file sizes that are unnecessarily big, and if your email hosting is with Magicdust, it may be that your emails are being stored on your server account, instead of being downloaded to your local computer.

If you would like a specific audit of your website, to identify the areas where your resources are being consumed the most. Please email [email protected] so we can have our team look into this for you and offer any advice on how this could potentially be reduced.
