Just because your website is now live does not mean that it will instantly appear on Google. There are a few steps involved with seeing your name up there in Google lights!

First is getting your site verified or indexed on Google.
To do this you need to create a Google account.
Do this here: www.google.com/webmasters/tools

Next add your domain name to the dashboard and follow the instructions to verify your website.

Once your website is verified it should appear in the Google listings when you type in your domain name. However if your site is verified it still may not show up for ages. I have waited for 4 months for a site to be indexed. This was the longest I have ever waited, some websites appear immediately. Google is unpredicatable in many ways and has many varying algorithms for determining how websites are listed. These are constantly changing and are often surprising.

When your website is indexed by Google and your domain appears in the search it will still probably not appear if you type in a keyword associated with your website. This is where Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) comes in.

SEO is the process of climbing the search rankings through optimising your website content to be classified as ‘highly relevant’ by search engines when a searcher types in a specific keyword. A good SEO strategy is expected to produce results after a 12 month commitment. And commitment is the keyword. Learning about SEO and implementing the process can be one of the best investments you make in your website.
