Here are a few questions to ask yourself before choosing your shopping cart

Can the shopping cart grow with my business? Basically you want to choose a shopping cart with unlimited products and categories, that way you can start small and grow big and make lots of money

Who is going to help me run my shopping cart? It is advised that you go with a provider in your own country. If you are new to e-commerce it is of great benefit to you that you have support with your shopping cart. Make sure you know the type of support you are getting and test it. Ring you potential providers support desk and make sure you can get through on the phone and you are not put on hold

How are you going to accept payments? Can your shopping cart integrate with a payment gateway that suits you budget. For example the PayPal payment gateway is free to sign up for and they take 1-2% of you sales.

Can you bulk upload? If you already have a shop or stock, it would be ideal for you to be able to bulk upload you products rather than adding them one at a time

What about Promo codes, Newsletters and Site Wide Sales? If you have an excess of stock or if you get in new products it would be ideal to let you customers know about them, even better if you can do it from your shopping cart software. Alternately if you have a new online shop and you would like increase your visitors it would be good to give them a promo code that they can use to receive a discount on their first purchase

Do you have to put in one large image and one small image of every product or can you just put in one image and auto generate thumbnails? You really want to be able to auto generate thumbnails in your shopping cart software. This wills save you time, web space and bandwidth

Can you change the tax? You need to be able to adjust the tax in the event of a tax increase (likely!) or decrease (unlikely!)

How are you going to be able to ship your products? You may want to offer you customers the ability to choose from different shipping methods so they can get their product fast if they need it
