Creating a Podcast
What is A Podcast
A podcast is an audio file that you can easily create on your computer and distribute over the internet. Podcasting is different from other audio files in the sense that it can be easily downloaded to a users mp3 player.
Pod casting is popular with radio hosts, keynote lecturers, authors, musicians and crazy people that want to have a rant. It is also a good way catch up on any missed university lectures.
What do I need to Create a Podcast
To start creating your own podcast all you will need is some recording software and a recording device. The common theme of “you get what you pay for” can be assumed when thinking about purchasing a microphone; however there is some good recording software out there that you can download for free.
Microphones - Logitech is a fairly reliable brand that can be purchased just about anywhere. To alleviate clutter on your desk you may want to consider getting a microphone/headset combination
Software - Audacity is the most popular free, easy-to-use audio editor and recorder for Windows. Once it is downloaded onto you can have a little play with the software. Practice recording, integrating you music etc, you can use the help menu for steps and tutorials. Once you have made a recording in Audacity you will need to convert it into a mp3 file. To do this you have to download an encoder, the lame encoder integrate with Audacity Once you have done this you will be able to save you files as MP3’s.
Once you have created an mp3 file you can then play it in a digital media player. iTunes is an easy to use player that you can download for free. You can set iTunes as you default media player and just double click on the mp3 file to open it, or you can drag and drop the file into you playlist.
I have made my Podcast, what now?
You need to get on you digital soap box my friend. You can attach you podcast to you emails (most people will have a media player on their computer), or publish them on your website. To publish them to you website it is suggested that you use an external host as not to chew up your bandwidth. BoomMp3 is very easy to use you simply grab your file from you computer upload it and it will give you a link which you can embed into you site. BoomMp3 is also good because you can set it to play as soon as the website is loaded.
If you believe your wild ranting is really worth letting the world know about you can submit you podcasts to itunes and see if they agree with you
